You may remember our post last year that announced we'd give money to two PR students to attend a conference and create a PSA for the team.

The oh-so-convenient bus stop outside the graphic arts/journalism building is now non-existent. Apparently, a group of students used student fees one year to pay for the project that entirely closes South Perimeter, making access by car to the journalism building impossible. My big question: How is the Mustang Daily going to order pizza?!

Here are a few important points from Cal Poly PR:

South Perimeter Road is officially closed to vehicle traffic, and there is now a STOP sign for westbound (incoming) traffic at the California Boulevard entrance to Cal Poly (at California Boulevard and Campus Way).
South Perimeter Road (between Campus Way and Grand Avenue) closed for good Friday, Sept. 11. Access there is now limited to emergency and service vehicles only.
Construction vehicles will be allowed to use it until completion of the UU Plaza and Rec Center expansion projects. Cal Poly students voted to pay more fees to pay for those two projects.
Buses will continue to use stops by the Performing Arts Center on Grand Avenue (outbound routes) and Sage Restaurant (inbound routes) until the new transit stops are complete. The new transit stops by the Library are open. The transit stops at Graphic Arts are closed.

New professor offices

PRSSA recently wrote a blog post about upcoming changes to faculty offices. It's useful information so we're highlighting it again here on our blog. It's basically a big game of musical chairs, except faculty offices instead of chairs, and everyone wins:

CCPR has moved to Room 207 (formerly the GRC office).

Dr. Swanson is moving to Room 222 (formerly Brady Teufel's office).

Teufel is moving to 224 (formerly the Daily editors' office) with the new multimedia professor.

The editors are moving to Paul Bittick's office.

Bittick moves to Teresa Allen's office.

Professor Allen moves to Swanson's old office.

(Are you still with me? When the music stops, everyone has an office!!!)

New members, new money

The Cal Poly journalism CBF committee welcomes three new members and one returning member for the upcoming school year:

Lindsay Indermill - new
Katie Bohn - new
Katherine McIntyre - new
Lauren Rabaino - returning

We had our first meeting Friday, June 5 and have already approved money for the following expenditures.

RTNDA

Student Jessica Armstrong submitted a request for $325 for her RTNDA registration, which we approved.

New JOUR 203 class

Because we only planned for 35 new journalism students in the fall, and now have an expected 68, the committee approved funds to support an additional introduction to reporting class, averaging to about $6,000.

Additional supplies

The remaning CBF money (about $4,000) will be spent on equipment and/or supplies. The specifics of the expenditure breakdown are yet to be determined. Department Chair Bill Loving will compile the list on items to be purchased (since he knows best), but the committee will first review and approve the list.

Why are we spending all the additional money? Because it doesn't rollover to next year.

Students heading to broadcast and PR conferences

We recently awarded money to a few broadcast and public relations students heading to conferences in the upcoming months.

RTNDA Conference

The Radio-Television News Directors Association conference will be held April 12-16 in Las Vegas and more than 1,300 students and professionals are expected to attend.

These are a few reasons students told us for wanting to attend:

Attending the conference would allow me to strengthen my broadcasting skills with workshops and would give me insight from experienced professionals about the ever-changing broadcast profession. -Brittney Davis-Pulley, journalism senior

RTNDA attendees have the advantage of networking with industry leaders from around the country. Such opportunities are rare, however, essential in a business where everything depends on "who you know." I strongly feel that making connections and attending workshops will help me see what I can do to improve myself as a digital journalist. -Jessica Armstrong, journalism senior

Amount granted: $150 per student. So far 6 students have requested money, but we're expecting 10. The amount is tentative. If more than 10 students make requests, the amount will go down. If fewer than 10 students make requests, the amount will go up.

PRSSA 2009 National Assembly

Public relations concentration Kelsey Magnusen, a journalism sophomore, attended the PRSSA 2009 National Assembly as Cal Poly's delegate. The conference was March 26-29 in New Orleans.

As the only delegate from Cal Poly's chapter, she was able to share all she learned with the rest of her PRSSA members.

"I hope to further develop and inspire Cal Poly's PRSSA chapter!" Magnusen said in her request.

Joint journalism/Grc meeting

The journalism and graphic communications departments are teaming up to host a meeting about the proposed CBF increases.

Two journalism students going to nationwide business competetion

The CBF approved $350 each to two students who will travel to Houston and Orlando for NASA's 11th Annual Consumer Engagement Conference.

Although we couldn't cover the entire cost of their trip ($530 for travel and $470 for lodging) we are happy to help partially pay the way.

A few notes about what they're doing:

Conference is from May 4-7 2009
Chance for national exposure for Cal Poly's journalism department
The two students, Brad and Ashley, are designing all promotional materials for the project
Business/aerospace aspect completed by aerospace grad student Coleman Younger
The students will present a 30-second public service announcement to NASA officials
PSA is only one portion of it; students must create a branding/PR strategy
Also creating a Web site and using new media to spread the word
Cal Poly's team is the only school that hasn't been a finalist in the competition before
Cal Poly is one of 7 finalists of about 80+ entrants

About their requests and the conference

Bradford Applin, broadcast junior:

The student is a member of the Cal Poly NASA Means Business 2009 team and as a finalist team we must attend the NASA orientation in Houston in late February and the Customer Engagement Conference in Orlando in early May. The student will present to top NASA officials and compete against the other finalist schools for the chance to present in Washington, DC in September. Ashley will receive constructive feedback from the top public relations officers at NASA and experience private tours of NASA's facilities.

Ashley Hudson, public relations senior:

The student is a member of the Cal Poly NASA Means Business 2009 team and as a finalist team we must attend the NASA orientation in Houston in late February and the Customer Engagement Conference in Orlando in early May. Brad will be presenting the public service announcement that he and other members of the team will create using CPTV facilities. He will compete against the other PSA entries for the opportunity to air Cal Poly's PSA on NASA's website and potentially on a major television network. This is a wonderful opportunity for Brad to receive feedback on his broadcasting experience and to market the strength and quality of Cal Poly broadcasting.

You should care about your CBF committee

I didn't know the CBF committee existed until faculty members told me to run for a position. Granted, I'm only a sophomore, but even a few of the seniors I talked to didn't know about the CBF.

It shouldn't be this way. We want you to know we exist and that we're here to improve the department with your money.

That's right, this is your money at stake. You pay the fees every quarter. And we're here to be your voice. We want to make sure the money is well-spent.

A few things we consider when deciding where to spend CBF money:

How many students will benefit?
How long will this purchase last?
What will be gained (beyond materialistically) from the purchase?
How will each concentration (print, PR, broadcast) benefit?
How strong of a need is there?
What are our alternatives?
What happens if we don't make the purchase?

We put a lot of time into what we do and we want to make sure we make purchases that will make a lasting impact.

If you ever have questions about the committee's procedures or want to meet with us for anything, our metaphorical doors are open to you (if only we had offices).

Although it's generally impossible to find even the most miniscule slice of time during which our schedules don't conflict, we learned tonight that late-night Skype conference calls do the trick. We'd be happy to set one up with you.

CBF approves the purchasing of this equipment and necessary accessories up to $300. (The monitor will be displayed in the hall outside of the Mustang Daily showcasing student work from print, broadcast and PR concentrations)

The following proposals have been rejected by CBF as of Thursday, January 15:

(CPTV) Firewire -- $261.68
CBF committee members feel that this cost is unnecessary until tapeless cameras have been purchased.
(CPTV) Printer -- $929.00/$334.00
CBF committee members feel the cost is too high since there is already a functioning printer in the lab.

The following proposal is pending approval:

(CPTV) Monitor -- $517.00
CBF committee members were under the impression that the monitor was included in the $7,900 equipment cost that was approved for the purchasing of the switcher. CBF will make no action on this proposal until more information is provided.

** It should be noted that while a proposal may be denied, there is no limit to how many times a proposal may be submitted to the committee. The more information provided within a proposal, the more consideration the committee will give to the proposal.**

What is CBF?

We are the college-based fees committee for Cal Poly's journalism department.

From Cal Poly's Liberal Arts CBF site:

The fee process in the College of Liberal Arts is overseen by the CLA Student Council, in conjunction with the CLA Dean, Linda Halisky. Basically, they make sure that department expenditure plans conform with:
the fee plan guidelines for Cal Poly and
specific criteria developed by the College of Liberal Arts in '01-02.
CBF budgets for the following academic year are determined each spring by a committee of students in each department (in the spring of '05, students will develop a budget for CBF expenditures for AY '05-06). During the academic year, committees made up of students from each department will review how funds are spent and make adjustments as necessary.

But who are WE, specifically? Our commmitee is comprised of four members:

Lauren Rabaino, at-large

We are dedicated to making sure your student fee money is well-spent. In prior years, the committee lacked transparency and direction. We're changing it up. On this blog, you can expect to find minutes from our meetings, announcements and any other issues that arise during our time.
